Walking through a wood on the way back from Castle Combe, Atalanta Lynton encounters a young man sketching. His name, she learns, is Paul – an Impressionist who, like other painters of that school, is reviled and scorned by his countrymen.
Paul and Atalanta fall in love; but she is to go to Paris with her cousin, Viscount Cottesford – who had asked for her hand. Now Atalanta must choose – wealth and position or love and poverty.
