In the mid 1950’s as Britain looks to a peaceful future, Annie Manon comes home to the north-east to fulfil a promise. With her husband Georgie and her brother Tom se has left her nightmares behind and is ready to build a new life for her family and provide work for women of Wassingham in her fledgling fashion business.
But as well as her wartime memories Annie must cope with the accident that cripples Georgie and the increasingly unreasonable behaviour of their daughter Sarah. When Sarah leaves the north-east for London Annie is torn between love for her troubled only child and the knowledge that she must continue working to ensure the survival of the business that supports the village of Wassingham and the woman whose lives were renewed by Annie’s promise.
